As with other cultures, Filipinos celebrate a Kasalan (Wedding) as a milestone and turning point. During the "ligawan" (courtship) of pre-modern times, the man dealt primarily with the woman's family. He would usually demonstrate his honest intentions for the woman by performing work for the woman's family, such as in the field or farm. The courtship culminated with the Filipino practice of "pamanhikan" when the prospective groom formally asked the bride's parents for her hand in marriage. Gifts from the groom's family were also usually presented at this time. The "pamanhikan" ritual is still practiced today, and the groom's family still generally shoulders all expenses for the wedding.
